The Edit — Bedroom, Byron Hinterland
It is the mix of new and old, high and low, aspirational and attainable that brings an interior to life. But when it comes to sourcing the right pieces for your bedroom — more than any other space — you want to focus on how the choices will make you feel.
To create a bedroom that feels calm and serene I opt for timeless hardware, natural materials, neutral textures and something a little unexpected, such as an oversized pendant.
Design tip — Allow your curtains to cascade to the floor to soften the look.
SHOP THE LOOK
Pendant
This pendant is both structural and gentle — it doesn’t overwhelm a space. Pictured is the black bamboo frame. It’s also available in natural bamboo for a more subtle look. Both available at Imprint House.
Design tip — Hanging a single pendant in a corner of the room adds asymmetrical appeal and can be more engaging for the eye.
Chair
Malawi chairs are as versatile as they are beautiful. Handcrafted in the African country of Malawi from cane and water reeds, they can be used indoors or outside. Add a cushion for extra comfort. Available at Malawi Cane.
Turkish pot
These vintage Turkish pots are infinitely useful as an accent piece, again both inside and outdoors. They add form and subtle layers of texture. Available at Garden Life.
Curtain rail
Hardware is something that’s worth an investment as you want it to function well, and look and feel good. This curtain rod was custom-made by a local maker Archer Industrial.
Design tip — Install your curtain rail at least 10-15cm above your window frame. The higher you go, the more elongated the room will look and feel.
Curtains
They look like linen but these curtains are actually a quick-fix — made from a painter’s canvas cotton drop sheet. You know, the sort that painters place on top of furniture as a protective layer. They were a covid lockdown project and I’ve loved them ever since. You can learn more about them in this video. Or you can buy them here.
Rug
Switching up the decorative objects that you have really is a quick and easy way to give your spaces a new energy. This rug normally lives in the Still Studio, but also adds a textural and dynamic element to the bedroom. Sourced from Kulchi.
Design tip — Let vintage suppliers know the dimensions and style of what you’re looking for and they will be able to do the sourcing for you.
Bed Linen
Linen bed linen is always my go-to. I love the relaxed, lived in feel it creates and my favourite supplier is Cultiver. Their range is full of beautiful colours so there’s something for every taste.
Styling tip — For an elevated look that’s more affordable than buying a whole set, try draping a single flat sheet over the top of the bed.
