What styling is… & isn’t

Styling is one of the best ways to transform your homes. And it is a skill that has not only launched my career, but improved my life too. But there’s often a lot of confusion about what styling actually is. I have used styling to make my home the best that it can be using what I’ve already got. I’ve used the principles that I’ve learnt working for magazines and clients, and put them into play into my own home.

Styling can sometimes seem like a shallow pursuit, or as if it doesn’t really make a difference. But I believe that it’s an invaluable skill that can help you make your home beautiful quickly and without great expense.

Here is what I’ve learnt about styling, and how it can help you.

Styling is…

A powerful way to make your home the best it can be using what you’ve already got.

The art of arranging objects to create a beautiful arrangement or scene.

The way you curate your collections.

The choices you make to edit your spaces.

Using the art and science of composition.

How to enhance your home every day so when you look at something it brings you pleasure.

A way to create viral content if you have an online business.

A way to help your Airbnb stand out from the crowd, and give your place personality.

A skill for life, and one that can be the springboard to a career you love.

Styling became popular in magazines because it was a way to make a space the best it can be. It was also a way to express your personal style, and what makes you and your home unique.

But styling can often get confused with decorating. So let’s get clear on what styling isn’t.

Styling isn’t…

Making structural changes to your home — no renovations are necessary.

Spending money on things you don’t want or need.

Just fluffing cushions.

Consumerism.

Copying someone else’s style.

Dependent on a big budget.

Only for artistic/creative types.

Styling can help you focus on what’s most important in your life, and enhance your experiences everyday. It’s a way to connect with what you value, and live your best life.

Want to see if it can help you?

Try this simple exercise:

Write down what it feels like to step inside your front door with your current home looking the best it can be. What do you notice?

Now, write down one thing you can do write now to make an improvement.
