Home Tour: The Mid-Century Modern Esmond House
One of the great advantages of staying at an Airbnb is not only getting to visit a new place, but also getting to experience a different style of home.
On a recent trip to Tasmania, when we discovered The Esmond, a mid-century home in Hobart’s Sandy Bay we couldn’t pass it up. We have never lived in a home from this era, but have always been curious.
And it didn’t disappoint.
The house was designed by Esmond Dorney, an Australian architect and it has been updated in subtle ways to make the most of the architect’s original vision, and make for a comfortable contemporary stay.
It is a joy to stay in homes that preserve architecture and honour the architect’s original intent. This is evident in the original timber panelling that features in the living room and hallways.
The home features four bedrooms, all with built-in storage and a cosy kitchen. As in keeping with homes of the era, there are large floor-to-ceiling windows that allow light to flood the spaces and make the modest footprint feel expansive.
