How to make a simple stylish wardrobe

Creating a home that you love is often walking a fine balance between what you want, and what you can afford. I know exactly the walk-in-wardrobe I want in my home. I’ve already designed it in my head. But, for now, a temporary solution is required. However, I had three key criteria — it had to be beautiful (albeit in a simple way), I didn’t want to use toxic products that would end up in landfill (such as MDF), and it had to be quick and easy to make.

BEFORE

Solution 1 — Clothes hanging storage

In our last home we used a piece of bamboo from the property as a hanging rail for my daughters’  dresses. It was a good long straight piece so I kept it, knowing it would come in handy again one day. But you could use a tree branch or a piece of dowel from a hardware store. Also, sisal rope was used to hang the rail from the ceiling. (We always keep a stash of sisal in our supplies cupboard, as well as cotton sash cord — both come in handy.)

Solution 2 — Shelving space

I needed a shelf to be able to store baskets filled with belts, and other accessories. This is also where I store my hats. We were able to use a leftover piece of E0 plywood, which is a low formaldehyde emission rating. You can read more about the ratings of plywood here

Solution 3 — Wardrobe edit

The final step was to edit my actual clothing, and create a capsule collection. I’ve always edited my collections but seeing my clothes on display inspired me to really love each piece. And so I asked the simple question of each one: ‘Would I buy this again?’ There were so many that I left go because I wouldn’t for various reasons (the cut, colour, length…)

If you are looking for a simple and effective way to hang your clothes, I hope this has helped you.
